Enfield: Location And History

Enfield is a London borough in North London.  The main towns are Edmonton, Enfield Town, Southgate and Palmers Green. 

Enfield Town used to be a small market town in the county of Middlesex, on the edge of Epping forest, about a day’s walk north of London. As London grew, Enfield Town and its surrounds eventually became a residential suburb, with fast transport links into central London. 

Enfield has a long history dates back to Roman times, as a result Enfield has many fine examples of listed period buildings. 

Did you know… the Barclays Bank branch in Enfield was the first place in the world to have an ATM or cash machine!



Enfield has a mix of Victorian houses, 1920s and 1930s semi-detached and terrace houses and modern flats.  House prices are reasonable by London standards, Enfield is one of the cheaper London boroughs in which to buy a property. 


Around a third of Enfield is designated green belt land so there are plenty of parks and green spaces, perfect for Londoners who want a more rural feel.  With fantastic transport links Enfield residents can get into central London in under 45 minutes. 


Enfield has many good schools making this a popular borough with families.  

Enfield benefits from excellent transport links both into London and out into the surrounding areas. 


By train… 


There are six London Overground stations in Enfield: Bush Hill, Edmonton Green, Enfield Town, Silver Street, Southbury, and Turkey Street.  Enfield Town to Liverpool Street takes around 35 minutes. 


Enfield is served by National Rail Great Northern services, which stops at eight stations within the borough.  Enfield Chase to Moorgate also takes around 35 minutes. 


Enfield is served by the Piccadilly Line, the borough has 4 tube stations: Arnos Grove, Southgate, Oakwood, and Cockfosters. 


All stations are in Zone 5. 


By bus… 


Transport for London operates 36 bus routes in Enfield, plus seven school bus routes and three night–bus services. 


By road… 


Enfield has easy access to the M25, making it just a short drive to desirable places in Hertfordshire like St Albans, and Epping Forest to the north.

When it comes to shopping the town centres within the borough have everything from the high street giants to smaller independent shops. 


The Palace Shopping centres in the heart of Enfield Town has everything you need from supermarkets to chemists to fashion. 

There are two beautiful country parks Enfield.  Trent Park is a haven for wildlife and humans alike providing miles and miles of relaxing walks amidst serene fields and enchanting woodland. For adventure seekers there is an added bonus of a Go Ape. 


Forty Hall is a grade 1 listed manor house set in beautiful gardens.  Explore the museum and gardens and relax in the family run Nice Green Café.  For younger members of the family there is also a petting farm on the estate.  


The Dugdale Centre in Enfield town centre houses one of the best and busiest local museums in the capital. 


If you enjoy eating out, Enfield has its fair share of both chain restaurants like Prezzo, Frankie & Bennys, Nandos and Cafe Rouge and whole load of individual restaurants of different cuisines. 


Enfield has plenty of other entertainment options including two cinemas, a trampoline park, Indoor Karting and soft play centers for the kids.

    Barking has always been popular with families and is a good place buy affordable three-bedroom 1930’s family homes with potential to extend.


    The excellent transport links to central London and the Barking Riverside London Overground station’s imminent opening means Barking is also attracting first-time buyers and renters who commute to their jobs in the City and Canary Wharf.

  • Transport Links

    By train… 


    Barking station is in Zone 4 and provides 15-minute fast trains to Fenchurch Street in the City. The station is also on the District and Hammersmith & City London Underground lines.


    The Overground runs from Gospel Oak to Barking, and this line is due to be extended to Barking Riverside.


    By bus… 


    Several buses connect Barking Riverside to Barking town centre and the station. Many London bus routes serve the borough including a night bus which travels into Central London.


    By road… 


    Barking is on the A406 North Circular Road and close to the A13, leading to the M25 London Orbital motorway.

  • Local Schools

    Barking state primary schools are mainly rated ‘good’ by Ofsted.


    There are several good choices of comprehensive secondary schools, including Barking Abbey and Riverside School. Much of Barking falls within the catchment area of Redbridge’s ‘outstanding’ grammar schools so these selective schools are also an option.

  • Shopping

    Barking has a busy and thriving market in the town centre on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.


    The town centre has most of the high street staples along with side small independent shops and cafes.


    Barking is well served for supermarkets, there are Tesco and Asda superstores as well as a large selection of smaller food stores.

  • Things to do

    Barking Abbey Green in the town centre was the site of Barking Abbey, originally built in the 7th century. The abbey’s ruined remains, the Grade II listed Curfew Tower and the Grade I listed St Margaret’s Church are all located within the park.


    Barking Park to the east of Barking town centre has a mile-long boating lake, heritage trail, miniature railway, children’s playground and tennis courts.


    It is easy to keep active in Barking with two leisure centres. The Abbey Leisure Centre has two swimming pools, a gym and fitness studios alongside a spa and kids soft play. Barking Sport House and Gym has a large gym over three floors and fitness and group cycle studios. There is also a 5 court sports hall, trampoline park, climbing wall, stakepark and kids soft play area.
