WILLIAM GRANT & PARTNERS

The Association of Residential Letting Agents

The Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA) was formed in 1981 as the professional and regulatory body for letting agents. As the residential letting market was seen as so detailed and specific it was necessary for a separate organisation to promote the standards in this growth sector of the property market. The role of ARLA is to regulate and appraise all members and to provide guidelines, advice and training. To ensure that a framework of ethical standards and professionalism are maintained at a level higher than the law demands the skills of member firms and their staff are continually developed by ARLA training courses and seminars. ARLA membership is only obtained after strict investigation and interview. All members are required to have a full understanding of the provisions and terms of successive Rent Act's, Housing Act's and contract law. ARLA has the knowledge and experience to help members deal with the complexities of letting for both landlords and tenants and to campaign for necessary changes in legislation and practises. ARLA is now understood to be vital to the housing sector and the economy as a whole as it is recognised by government and local authorities, consumer interest groups and the media as the leading professional body in the private rental market. The ARLA Fidelity Bond is designed as a protection of first resort for monies entrusted to ARLA members by landlords and tenants during the ordinary course of their business as letting agents. The Buy-to-Let scheme launched by ARLA is a joint initiative with mortgage lenders. This scheme is designed to help individuals who wish to invest in property to let without being penalised by mortgage surcharges and commercial rates of interest. Mortgage lenders involved in the scheme will take into account the rental income that could be achieved from a property.
